Two Types of Logic: Ti vs. Fi (Introverted Thinking vs. Feeling)

Introverted thinking is systems oriented logic while introverted feeling is people oriented logic.

Fixation is key

Many people in the MBTI type community conflate introverted thinking (Ti) with logic and introverted feeling (Fi) with emotion. This incorrect assumption leads people to think that INFPs who (based on their cognitive stack) lack Ti are therefore illogical and incapable of supporting their beliefs with rational arguments. This cannot be further from the truth. Introvert feeling (Fi) and introverted thinking (Ti) are both logical judging functions that make decisions and categorize the world by breaking down the individual components of their internal fixation. Their fixation however is very different.

· Fi is fixated on people, emotions, and the human experience.

· Ti is fixated on systems, impartiality, and order.

Introverted feelers are not irrational people ruled by the whims of their emotions. Instead, they have a superpower of being specially attuned to their own emotions and innately understand the practical purposes behind those emotions. Introverted thinkers on the other hand are not emotionless robots. Instead, they have a superpower of being specially attuned to systems thinking unclouded by emotions. The primary distinction between these functions is that one values emotions while the other values dispassionate systems. You can frequently differentiate between a thinker and a feeler based on what they talk about. An Fi user tends to talk about people while Ti users tend to talk about things or systems.

It’s Preference Not Capacity

The Fi Ti contrast is about preference not capacity. It doesn’t mean Ti users can’t perform in people oriented fields like psychology or that Fi users can’t perform systems thinking, it just means they prefer their natural fixation and approach these fields differently. An INTP psychologist for example is going to be motivated by their love of systems that analyze human behavior in a dispassionate way and will use these methodical systems to categorize patients and prescribe solutions. Psychology for an INTP is a puzzle to be solved and organized. Their pleasure is in the creation and implementation of the system not the people.

An INFP engineer on the other hand will be motivated by the positive emotions that their completed creation will bring to themselves and to others. The ultimate human benefit is the reward, not creating the process or system in and of itself. Naturally INFPs will on average be drawn to human fields and INTPs to system fields. The tedium of engineering will wear on the INFP and the constant emotionality of psychology patients will wear on the INTP. Frequently though the outsider perspective they bring to these counterintuitive mismatches gives each type a competitive advantage over colleagues, this is why I’m opposed to using type to screen applicants. Diversity of type is needed in all fields.

Overall, Fi users feel emotions more deeply and have a better understanding of them because of their comfortability in the world of emotions. Conversely Ti users are more aware of the systems that surround us and have a better understanding of them because of their comfortability with sequentially ordered things. Both functions are logical. An INFP will be very articulate defining the logic behind their belief systems. It is a myth that INFPs can’t defend their belief systems logically. They can do this because they love breaking down the components of their feelings and values. When it’s people oriented INFPs will take the time to assess the logical framework of their beliefs.

What Fi and Ti are paired with matters

The one caveat I’d give is that ISFPs who are pairing their Fi with Se may struggle more to articulate the logic behind their beliefs because their Se moves them to physical representations of their emotions and beliefs rather than the more abstract verbal nature of INFPs that pair Fi with Ne. We see a similar pattern when comparing INTPs and ISTPs. INTPs are more likely to be into the abstract logic of quantum physics and ISTPs will have more concrete expressions of logic in mechanics. Below is how I would classify the inclinations of the four IP types. I know people may pushback against art being logic but good art is logical while bad art is nonsensical. There must be a rational through line from the emotions of the artist to the message of the art, hence Fi/Se is physical logic.

INFP = Philosopher (abstract logic) — Fi/Ne

INTP = Scientist (abstract logic) — Ti/Ne

ISFP = Artist (physical logic) — Fi/Se

ISTP = Mechanic (physical logic) — Ti/Se

Ti is tough, Fi is friendly

The natural result of Ti valuing systems over people is that they are tough and less affected by their own emotions or the emotions of others. This is a superpower in contexts where safety and goals are paramount over the fickle feelings of people. A Ti user can easily stick to their logical framework even when it might make people angry or sad.

The natural result of Fi valuing emotions and people is that they care about their own feelings and the feelings of others so they tend to have a more friendly vibe. This is a superpower when leading, organizing, or socializing with people. Ironically this is also very valuable in systems creation because people generally need to like a system if they’re going to use it and participate in it.

Fi = Self Awareness

Ti = Systems Awareness

Overall these orientations make Fi users the most self aware and self reflective people while Ti users are the most system aware people who understand how machines and systems operate better than anyone else. Self Awareness makes one personable while systems awareness makes one tough and resilient.

The intelligence of Fi vs Ti

I will concede that Ti is more closely related to the logic used on traditional IQ tests because IQ tests are things and systems oriented. If I had to choose someone to (on average) score better on an IQ test I would chose the INTP over the INFP (although both types have Ne which gives both types an IQ advantage). An IQ test though does not measure emotional intelligence, philosophy, or ethics. This makes for an interesting future where Ti users may have unintentionally systemized themselves into a less prominent role in society with the rise of AI systems. In the age of AI, the systems thinking of an INTP is more easily replicated by computers than the more human skills of an INFP. I suspect Fi is about to become much more valuable in the marketplace than Ti.
